a 7-year-old hit while crossing the street. the driver takes off and it's captured on camera. police are asking you to pay close attention. good evening. i'm carolyn johnson. >> abc 7 news alan wong is live in hercules with the story. a remarkable piece of video. >> that elderly man was struck in this crosswalk with only one witness. good police work by detectives who had a hunch that one of the buses may have caught it on videotape. they took the exact time and matched it up with the bus schedule and bingo. you are looking at video from a transit bus that captured a 70-year-old man just before he
gets hit by a dark suv. the vehicle stops and moves forward, knocking him out of the frame. what happens next is what shocks police. >> the driver got out, looked at the victim and a witness passing said is he okay and the driver said he is breathing. the driver got back in his vehicle, backed up and drove around the victim and drove away. >> this happened around 6:30 in the morning in hercules. >> unbelievable. what kind of human being would do that? >> it's a caucasian male in his 40s about 6'2", 220 pounds and balding. the crosswalk on and off-ramp can be dangerous. >> occasionally we get cars that don't stop. they get off the freeway and keep going. they honk at the people crossing. >> the elderly man had a serious head injury and memory loss so he has been unable to identify the suv and they hope other
witnesses with more information can help them track down the driver. in hercules, alan wong, abc 7 news. >> breaking news from egypt. a large explosion in cairo. a car bomb targeted police headquarters. you can see heavy damage. the blast was so strong it created a crater in the ground. there was gunfire in the area immediately following the explosion. this comes on the eve of the anniversary of the 2007 up rising of mubarak. >> more about the shooting death of a bart police officer. an autopsy confirms tom smith was killed by one bullet to the chest. he was wearing his bulletproof vest at the time, but it passed through a gap in the vest. a 13-year bart police veteran has been identified as the officer who shot smith.
it is not whether he fired by mistake or mistook him for someone else. mays's attorney told abc 7 news his client is grieving and his heart goes out to the smith family. >> officer mays is cooperately cooperating with citizen review and the alameda sheriff and his own department and everybody involved and the only really polite civil professional thing to do is to let the investigation move through the course. >> in the meantime, funeral plans are being finalized for sergeant smith. we were overhead as the body was brought to the chapel of the chimes funeral home. family members saluted as smith's body was taken inside. at about the same time, the directors asked for a moment of silence for smith. a 20-year veteran of the course. >> the crime of passion was
serving and at the same time. >> two of the officers at the scene in dublin were wearing cameras, but the chief said he did not know if they recorded the 14509ing. >> a viewing has been scheduled for tuesday night at chapel of the chimes in hayward. the funeral will take place 10:00 a.m. wednesday. a neighborhood church known as the three crosses church in castro valley. bart set up a thomas smith memorial fund to benefit his family. we have the address and account number posted at ab, c 7 news.com. >> an oakland teenager suspected of shooting and killing his sister in a fight over laundry is on the run. that was in the city center apartment building. family members gathered outside in utter shock. police say justice and her
brother were arguing over the bleaching of mario's clothes. their father can't believe it. >> i never -- i don't understand. the devil is working all the time. all the time. >> the family told us justice was the mother of a 3-year-old girl. >> the winning surf competition known as mavericks is a few short hours away, but a warning to any boater orphans who want to get close to the action. the coast guard said stay away. we go now near half moon bay. lisa? >> i'm in the back of the oceana hotel where the mavericks festival will take place. there will be live bands and food vendors and the jumbotron will show it live. this is the best and the safest
place to be. the biggest of the big surfers are here. they have the boards in hand and they are wearing the confidence on their sleeves. at least in front of the guys. you nervous? >> very nervous. >> jay mcsterling has surfed mavericks before, but conditions will be rough. >> it's very challenging to drop down 50 foot waves with a south wind blowing up the face of it. >> if it's not ideal, imagine how average people would handle it. the coast guard issued a warning to boaters to steer clear of the area. >> we are concerned that the spectators may get into trouble because they may not know their abilities. >> your expectations? >> he is not worried about the waves or the warnings and packing a cat ma ran for the passengers he will take out tomorrow. all of these boat ownerships plan to get close to mavericks.
>> anything close. they are on the way down. >> the water will be regulated and the beaches will be off limits starting at 6:00 a.m. organizers urge the fans to watch at the festival and the oceana hotel parking lot or online. some are heeding the warnings, some are not. >> around the water, i want to get as close as i can. >> it's better to be in the parking lot. >> mavericks's first heat is at 8:00 a.m. >> if you are going to be out on a boat where they will check to make sure everyone has a life jacket. reporting live, abc news. >> lisa, thank you. abc 7 will be streaming the invitational live starting at 8:00 a.m. that's on the home page. that will be the safest way to watch. we have details on the high surf and the red flag warning. >> we have a lot going on.
you see the wave heights are building. let's look at what's going on. the high surf advisory until 9:00 tomorrow. wave heights along the coast are around feet or so. they are expected to build by tomorrow and down in the area of the surf competition at mavericks, we are talking about wave heights of up to 40 feet. that's the surfers. stay away from the coastline. we also have a red flag warning in effect until friday and 1:00 a high fire danger for all of the area hills and mountains. gusts over 30 miles per hour. we are talking about a warm dry flow that raises the concern for fire. >> thanks very much. bruno park riders are mopping up after a fire caused severe damage to a restaurant. it broke out at the k grill and tofu house. the fire shot out of the roof of

live at san jose police headquarters, the owner of the camera would have to authorize it first, right? >> that is correct, but this could save police a lot of time because they wouldn't have to go door-to-door, searching for surveillance. he would gladly volunteer to have his cameras registered in a database. >> it's a great idea. there have been a couple of instances where i had to provide film to the police. >> city councilman is behind the proposal. >> the benefit of this process is to give police a ready phone number and identity of a person when they need this. we saw for instance with a recent attack. >> that was one of the investigations that he was able to help with. the system caught video of the suspect, walking by his home several times. >> it was nice to actually help him to be a good citizen. >> kristin is more skeptical of

>> presidential pie. let's look at live doppler over the bay area. it was a disturbance over the cierre as that produced light snow near lake tahoe, but it's over now. in the bay area, we have almost summer-like day. the 11th consecutive day of record highs matching the existing record of open museum for the date. live from colorado over san francisco. 52 degrees here in san francisco, 50 across the bay. in oakland 46. 50 at san jose and mid 40s. another live view from the camera downtown, 39 degrees. 46 in napa and low 40s and mid 40s. a live view at the financial district downtown. the forecast features the hills through tomorrow and high surf through tomorrow as well. dry and mild pattern will
continue well into next week. satellite shows the low pressure system brought the light snow to the tahoe area. it will pass and take it westward and northward. as it passes through, it brought clouds up and into tomorrow afternoon. no rain for the clouds. mild conditions once again tomorrow. a look ahead, ten days, we will get into early february, we will see moisture and produce trace amounts of rainfall. nothing significant and it could be a sign of a wetter pattern. no wet weather and clear and dry. the inland valleys, low to mid 40s around the coast. partly cloud tow mainly sunny. dry and mild. high temperatures from mid 60s to upper 60s to near 70 around the bay. here's the seven-day forecast. this goes on and on for the next seven days.
high temperatures by mid-week next week, mid- to upper 70s and around the bay with mid- to upper 60s on the coast. that little and early february will occur from next weekend. it doesn't look like much rain, but does signal a change. >> we hope. 70s on the forecast is so unusual. >> at the end of january in the 70s. upper 70s. >> thanks. >> very good news for golden state warriors. >> larry? >> maybe out next tuesday and wednesdaymented. >> 76. >>
